Mark Richard Benson, a well known local musician, died on December 26. He was 53 years old.
Mark was best known and loved for his big smile and larger than life presence; his passion for life and his music was truly remarkable. He touched many lives with warmth and kindness, always willing to reach out to friends and strangers alike.
Mark was born in Glasgow, Montana in 1958 to Lawrence H. Benson and Charlotte (Ulrigg) Benson.
He moved to Sonoma County as a teenager and settled there for 30 years, making friends and music along the way. He often remarked that he lived in "paradise", and would ride his motorcycle from the coast to the redwoods, always taking back roads on sunny days.
Weekend nights you'd find him rockin' the house with his band CounterBalance, weekdays he traded his guitar for a wrench and went to work as the Facilities Technician at 24 Hour Fitness in Petaluma.
Mark will be lovingly remembered by his many friends and family, he is survived by his three sons; Bryan (Bethany) Benson of Phoenix, AZ, Garrett Benson of Petaluma and Dylan Benson of Santa Rosa, His father Lawrence H. Benson of Montana, sisters Laura Benson-Karson of Santa Rosa and Julie Benson-Rosston of Montana, brothers Brad Benson of South Dakota and John Wahl of Geyserville; nephew Matthew Karson, nieces Kristina Karson, Jamie Karson, and Kellie Karson;, and his loving partner Christina Kallay of Petaluma.
His cat Cleo waits patiently for him at the door.
