Elder Benjamin Jefferson, a son of the late Mr. Harry Jefferson and Mrs. Sirena Dingle Jefferson, was born on May 12, 1929 in Cross, South Carolina. He departed this life for a place of peace and rest on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home.

Benjamin Jefferson grew up in Berkeley County and attended the community school for a few years. His education was cut short because he had to work in the fields and help to care for his younger brothers. He also lived with the Husser family for a period of time. He was employed as a Janitor and school bus driver by the Berkeley County Public School System where he retired after 30 years of service. Later, he was employed at I.G.A of St. Stephen for 13 years.

Benjamin accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and became a member of Poplar Hill Christian Church. He served as a member of the Deacon Board, the Senior Elder Board, and was church custodian. He displayed his love for God, his pastor, and his church and had a passion for helping others; he was a man of action.

For over 75 years, Benjamin Jefferson was a pillar in the Sandridge area where he touched the lives of many people. He was a loving, caring , and supportive husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a mentor and good friend to many; he will be greatly missed.

He was married to the love of his life, Mrs Viola Gilliard Jefferson for 52 years until her passing. Known affectionately to her as "Ben", he was preceded in death by three children: John Jefferson, Bennie Lee Jefferson and Letha A. Jefferson. A daughter-in -law, Shepper Jean Williams Jefferson, also preceded him to the grave.

He leaves to cherish sweet memories: five beautiful daughters, Rena (Apostle Willie ) Harmon of Boston, Mass., Jean (Bishop Melvin) Brown, Mary (Clyde) Smith, both of Cross, Marinda (Anthony ) Kingston, of Fairburn, GA, and Celestiine (Claude) Ravenell, of Pineville, SC; one son, Isaac Jefferson, of Cross, SC; Children reared in the home: one granddaughter, Shannon( Elder Tommie Lee) Johnson, of Holly Hill; two nephews: Daryl (Joyce) Jefferson, of North Carolina and Lubic Collins, of New York; many others whom he took into his home; sisters-in-law: Mary Jefferson, of Florida, Carry Jefferson, of Pineville, SC, Lillie (Cleveland) Merchant, Alam Smith, Annie Jefferson, all of Boston, Daisy (Hezekiah) Lee, of Eutawville, SC, Shirley (Frick) Jackson, of Cross, Celestine Gilliard and Vivian Gilliard, both of Woodridge, NY; and the joys of his heart: twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty two great -grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
