Dodson was the son of William and Mary (Unknown) VanDeventer. He was born on Oct 10, 1834 and according to the Kane County History Books was the first white child born in Kane County, Illinois. According to William VanDeventer's probate record Dodson had 4 living sisters and 1 living brother: Harriet, Eliza, Mary Ann (Polly), Jacob, and Helen.

On November 17, 1855 he married Elizabeth Stickler Banks b. Aug 1832 d. Apr 12, 1903. Dodson and Elizabeth had 7 children: Mary Ann, George, Male baby, Emory, Sarah, Romanzo and Charlotte. Dodson served during the Civil War as a private in the Illinois Infantry 156th Regiment joining on Feb 27, 1865 and mustering out on Sep 20, 1865.
