Jan. 20, 2013 obituary. SCARBOROUGH -- Muriel Jean Quinn Brown, born in Bath on Sept. 20, 1918, departed this life on Jan. 16, 2013, at the Scarborough Veterans Home where she had been residing since October 2009. She was the fourth daughter of John and Jean Burns Quinn. She graduated from Morse High School, class of 1936, and entered nursing school at Maine General Hospital, Augusta. Upon receiving her cap she enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of World War II. She was given a choice between 'someplace cold or someplace warm' and was soon on a troopship bound for the South Pacific. She was eventually stationed in the Fiji Islands, caring for the sick and wounded GI's. She annoyed her superior officers with her independent ways and was threatened by her Sergeant with being on the last boat to leave the island. This eventually turned out to be the case. Returning to civilian life she was introduced to a young Navy veteran, LCdr Charles R. Brown, who was attending the Clarence White Jr. Photography School in the Bath area. After completing Physical Therapy studies at New York University, she and Charlie were married on Oct. 24, 1948. Six children were born over the next 12 years. Muriel was a fixture in the Yarmouth community, active in the First Baptist Church, and the Audubon Society. She was outspoken and opinionated, a serious gardener; she combined an adventurous spirit with a legendary lack of sense of direction. She always had a dog. She never had a cat. She loved the birds and the natural world. She worked hard and did not complain and expected the same of others. She wrote letters like people used to write. She baked bread and made snickerdoodles and homemade root beer. She loved music and made her children take piano. She always volunteered for people in need. She lived her faith. Muriel was predeceased by her husband, Charles; son Michael, who was killed in a high school baseball accident; and a granddaughter, Eleanor. A celebration of her life is planned for Jan. 26, 2013, at the Tuttle Road Methodist Church at 2 p.m., followed by a luncheon. Ladies are encouraged to wear hats. The family would like to express their thanks and admiration to the staff of A Unit, Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough for the quality of care Muriel received in her residence there.
