He is NOT the son of Christopher Edmonds and Sally Towsley/Tousley who married after 1827 and had no children together. Read more below.

I have to put that at the top because some people only read the first line. Sorry.

All dates approximate.

Bartlett was not yet 21 in the 1819 tax roll because he isn't on it anywhere in Virginia. The birth date is based on the 1830 census where both he and wife are shown to be 20-29 years of age. That's another clue to believe he was born in or after 1800. We do NOT know the difference in their ages but people have guessed/copied that Lizzie was several years younger than Bartlett because that's what the "average" age difference was back then for the "average" person. Which still means nothing. It's more logical that Lizzie Stegall married around the age of 18 or 19 rather than from 21-29. Possibly the only reason someone wrote they were born in the 1790s was because they found the 1840 census before they found the 1830 census which they never clicked on and read. They both could have been born "on the cusp" of the age ranges and were 29 in the 1830 and 40 in the 1840 if they didn't pay strict attention to the "as of 1 June" instructions.

We still don't know exactly when or where he died but we can't expect a valuable "Grave" website to give us many data entry options on approximate death date or range and place. Their code only allows one date in the box. The last time he is seen is in the 1847 tax roll in Henry County, TN. It's important to revisit websites periodically if you're serious about these families because new info keeps popping up as more records come on line, often discrediting and totally rebutting previously "currently believed facts".

He died 1847 tax roll in Henry County, TN. We might assume he died before the next census in 1848. No one can find him on the 1850 census and his last of his children are living with their older sister.

He's in Marshall County, TN (thanks Gareth Mark for the find) 1839 through 1842, then appears in Henry, TN in 1843 through 1847.

Probably born Lunenburg, VA.

Marriage:

A family member identified her in print in the 1800s by first name.

BARTLETT'S probable children found/confirmed by DNA matches of descendants:
1. Emily Edmunds (married first Gordon Devore, moved to SW Missouri-- m2 UNK Jackson; m3 Jeremiah Ellsworth)
2. Calvin Curlee (per deed records -- never seen as Charles in print) Edmonds (moved to SW Missouri, married Lucinda Tittle)
3. Mary Jane Edmonds (marr Jeremiah Bennett (not son of Rosanna Lineberry, didn't die in 1880 in Buncombe, NC), moved to SW Missouri)
4. Nancy Edmonds (moved to SW Missouri, m1 James Moore, m2 James Knox Polk Clark)
5. Elizabeth Matilda Edmunds (married Kinsey Coates, moved to Marshall, KY then Bates, MO)

There's an ** 8-year gap ** between known children's probable births between 1827 and 1835. New wife? Epidemic?

There are three Edmonds children seen living with probable sister Mary Jane in the 1850 census:
-- Nancy #4 from above
-- James M Edmonds (prob married Argin Milstead; poss. son Wm Henry Edmonds/Edmunds born 1856. Never seen again unless that's the William seen with Calvin in the 1860 and 1870 censuses? No DNA matches that we can figure out so far and young William not seen/proved after 1870 census).
-- John Edmonds (prob the John Edmonds who married Calvin's wife's younger sister, Nancy Tittle, and "having no parents or guardian", his brother signed for his underage marriage. No DNA matches that we can figure out so far)

Re: the 3 kids born after the 8-year gap
Could Lizzie possibly have died earlier and Bartlett remarried, or did they not have kids for 8 years, or did those children die without ever being on a census, or did Bartlett not remarry and continue to have children? Is anyone born after 1835 a Laffoon/Stegall (or just an Edmonds?). But then again, Emily was old enough to be the mother (father unk). Calvin was old enough to be the father (mother unk) but no one really thinks that as far as I know.

He already might-perhaps-may-could be the father of the William born in 1855 in Tennessee who is on the 1860 and 1870 censuses with him and Lucinda or the father could have been the James who married Argen Milstead and died young as listed above. The William on those censuses wouldn't be Lucinda Tittle's child.

Henry Edmunds is possibly another child based on name and who he married (a Stegall cousin) but no DNA matches yet --perhaps because descendants haven't tested?

We are using the standardized spelling of STEGALL for Lizzie so that when people search we will all be searching for the same family. Lots of miscellaneous Steagall, Steagell, Stigell, Stigall, etc., but if we don't put one Stegall along with whatever other spelling you have in the surname box searchers will miss them.
Same problem with old records from Virginia under EdmOnds and EdmUnds. Always check your research records for both spellings.

If you've done DNA testing pls load your raw data onto free GEDmatch .com so we can have access to a chromosome browser and try to nail down the "other" siblings.

Interesting tidbit:
English commoners and English settlers in America in the 1600s and early 1700s didn't have middle names. Only 3 signers of the Dec. of Indep did and two of them were brothers. It's extremely rare to see males or especially females with middle names much before 1800s. Watch out for people in trees who show up with them. Often they are really one name or the other. But I've seen two wives combined into one person that way. Beware of "hints" and don't copy from other trees. If you can't find documentation write to the person who has a "fact" and ask them for their source. If they don't respond you'll have your answer.

Christopher Edmonds and Sarah Towsley/Tousley aren't his parents no matter how many trees copied them. That couple didn't get married until after 1827 (after his previous wife died) and didn't have any children together. He's not even Christopher's by either of his first 2 wives either. It takes a little research to disprove things. It's not as easy as clicking and saving errors off someone's tree.

He is not the BYRON S. EDMONDS who died in Andersonville (POW) in 1864.
There is a record for death of
"B. Edmonds"
Civil War solider from
* MICHIGAN *
who died in 1864
and someone clicked and saved it to their tree without doing any research. He was unmarried. Others have copied and have perpetuated errors.
