Actor. Best remembered for playing 'Douglas Wambaugh' in the TV series "Picket Fences" (1992 to 1996) and as 'Harvey Lipschultz' in the TV program "Boston Public" (2000 to 2004). Born Philip Finkel to Jewish parents who immigrated from Poland, his father was a tailor. His interest in acting can be traced back to his youth, when he participated in Yiddish Theater productions and later (he changed his first name to Fyvush which is the Yiddish translation of Philip), he made a name for himself as a standup comedian on the "Borscht Belt" circuit. For twelve-years, he was a cast member in Jerome Robbins' touring production of "Fiddler on the Roof". Finkel made his off-Broadway debut in the play "Gorky" (1975) and went on to earn an Obie Award and a Drama Desk nomination for playing 'Sam' in the production "Cafe Crown" (1988). He repeated the part of 'Sam', when "Cafe Crown" came to Broadway in 1989. A latecomer to television and films, he made his TV debut with a small role in a 1977 episode from the series "Kojak". During the 1980s, he found parts of substance in such films as "Seize the Day" (1986) and "Brighton Beach Memoirs" (1986). He will perhaps be remembered by movie audiences for playing the attorney, 'Preston Pearlstein' in Sidney Lumet's "Q & A" (1990). He received an Emmy Award for "Picket Fences" in 1994 and earned a Golden Globe nomination in 1995. In addition, he played the part of 'Fisher' in the revived TV series "Fantasy Island" (1998 to 1999). He died from heart related issues.
