Hansel L. Tucker, 83, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at his home.

Tucker was born March 7, 1923 in Citra, Okla. to George Washington and Gertrude (Brooks) Tucker. He moved to Keene, Texas, at a young age and then moved to Tularosa around the age of 17.

He met Lola Gililland while visiting his brother Roy at Roy's ranch in the San Andreas Mountains when he was 15 years old. After his service in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a radar man on a B-17, he married her on April 27, 1946, in Tularosa.

Tucker helped haul gravel to build the first runways at Holloman Air Force Base. He was in the grocery business for 25 years, and owned the New Market Grocery with his brother Tom for 20 years. After retiring from the grocery business, he and Lola created beautiful wedding cakes for 15 years. He then worked for the Otero County Road Department for 15 years as assistant road superintendent.

Tucker was a deacon at Bethel Baptist Church and a member for over 40 years, singing in the choir for 35 years. He enjoyed camping, horseshoes, croquet, cards and visiting with all of his many family members and friends. He was an inspiration to all who spent time around him, and they benefited from his humorous behavior.

Survivors include his wife, their children, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and his sister.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and fatherin-law, Ginerva and Bill Gililland; a grandson, Matthew Tucker; two sisters, Lessie Arvidson and Mary Lou Clarke; three brothers, Roy, Tom and Walter Tucker; and numerous other close family members.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Tucker and Alan Tucker officiating.

Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.

Friends may call this evening from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home, P.O. Drawer 629, Portales, NM 88130; or to Trinity Baptist Church, P.O. Box 377, High Rolls, NM 88337.
