FORT KENT, Maine — A local 19-year-old man died early Saturday when his motorcycle crashed on Route 161, according to police. According to Pelletier, Martin was operating a 2009 Harley-Davidson when he attempted to pass Donny McBreairty, 22, of St. John Plantation, who was operating a 2001 Harley-Davidson. Martin was traveling at a high rate of speed when he collided with McBreairty, causing both to lose control and be ejected from the motorcycles, the chief said. Neither operator was wearing a helmet, Pelletier indicated. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene and McBreairty was transported to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, he said. Both motorcycles had extensive damage. Pelletier said the case remains under investigation and that speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the accident.
The local police department was assisted by the Maine State Police and Fort Kent Fire and Rescue, according to the chief.
