JoAnn was born in 1930 in Kent, Ohio to Raymond and Mable Stem. Married for 57 years to Richard N. Wood, she lived most of her life in Tallmadge and was an active member of her community. In 2012, she received the City of Tallmadge Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest honors awarded by the city. A 1948 graduate of Tallmadge High School, she was a member of the Tallmadge Alumni Association, serving as treasurer for 20 years and was inducted into the Tallmadge Alumni Association Hall of Fame.
JoAnn was active in the First Congregational Church of Tallmadge where she sang in the choir, played with the bell choir, served on the Board of Deacons and as Treasurer of the Women's Fellowship Group, chaired the Funeral Dinner Committee, and served many, many meals for church activities. A founding member of Tallmadge Dynamics, she acted in almost every play and musical presented by the group since its inception. JoAnn was a life-long member of Tallmadge Grange, Summit County Pomona Grange, a delegate to the Ohio State Grange and a 7th Degree member of the National Grange. She was a member of the Dames of Malta, a Girl Scout leader, a 4-H advisor, and ran the Saturday Morning Junior Bowling League at Tallmadge Lanes. She volunteered her time making pinkie puppets for Children's Hospital and with other charitable organizations, including Friends of the Akron Symphony Orchestra - E.J. Thomas Children's Concert Series and Mobile Meals.
She is survived by daughters, Judy (Warren) Ripple, Janet (James) Divoky, Susan (Clifford) Yeager; and sons, Thomas R. Wood and Steven J. Wood; grandchildren, Michelle (Jeff) Tabnick, Nicole (Dave) Russ, Sara (Brad) McMahon, Joseph (Dorothy) Divoky, Laura and Patrick Divoky, Stephanie, Isaac, and Robyn Yeager (fiance, Jimmy Tucker), Cody and Jacob Wood, and Stephen (Kristy) Ripple; great-grandchildren, Genevieve and Danielle Divoky, Madison Russ, Benjamin Tabnick, and Kevin, Amy and Nathan Ripple. JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her stepfather, Alvin Barger; and her sister, Patty Skelley; and is survived by brother, Gale Stem.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, December 29, 2014 at the First Congregational Church 85 Heritage Dr., Tallmadge with Rev. Dr. John Schluep officiating, followed by a memorial service.
