A lifelong resident of the commonwealth, she lived for over 80 years in Pittsburgh before moving to Easton. She began her life in a happy home with her mother, father, younger sister Vera, and maternal grandfather, Henry W. Zinn. Grace attended Chatham Grade School and Perry High School on the Northside of Pittsburgh. After graduation, she worked at the soda grill in Horne's Department Store and for special events she worked in Kaufmann's Tea Room.
She married Charles Leo Brown on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1938 and on July 16, 1942 she gave birth to their only child, James Charles Brown DeMarco. Widowed at the young age of 28, Grace dedicated herself to raising their son, taking on the roles of both mother and father to the young child. She quickly found employment with Allegheny General Hospital in the Administration Department where she held a crucial role, scheduling surgeries for the entire hospital for almost 10 years.
On January 17, 1953 Grace remarried to Mario "Sam" DeMarco and the family moved to West View, in suburban Pittsburgh. She and Mario enjoyed 39 years of marriage together until Mario's death in 1992. Grace lived independently until the age of 99 and spent much of her free time with her two great-granddaughters, whom she called her "pride and joy". She was an active member of the Palmer Moravian Church where she participated in the YAHs (Young at Heart) group, bible study, and many events.
Just before her 100th birthday, she moved into Country Meadows of Bethlehem where she enjoyed her many friends and activities. She was the longest-living member of her family at 105 years old. She amazed and delighted all those who made her acquaintance and was a joy to all who knew her. She was intelligent, sharp-witted, passionate, caring, loving, and kind. As the Matriarch, she was the light and the love of her entire family.
Grace is survived by her granddaughter, Wendy DeMarco Fuentes (Lazaro Fuentes), and her two great-granddaughters Sabrina Grace Fuentes and Veronica Mirta Fuentes. She is also survived by her niece Ruth Hamm and Ruth's children and grandchildren Kirsten Smith, Johanna Hamm, Artika Radek (Rick Radek), Aeris Feinberg, Grace Hamm, and Edgar Smith; and her nephew Frank Zaremba (Maureen Zaremba) and his children Frank Zaremba III and Nick Zaremba.
A memorial service and celebration of her life is being planned for friends and family and will be held early in the new year. Burial will be in Northampton Memorial Shrine in Easton.
