Matthew White Fyffe was born in the Townland of Archill, Parish of Ardstraw, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1869 and came to Canada in 1890. He engaged in the North West Mounted Police on the 12 December 1892 in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was 5'9 3/4" in height, 166 pounds with dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a fair complexion. He was stationed in Dawson City, Yukon from 1897-99; Regina, SK, 1900; Touchwood, SK, 1901; Kutawa and Broadview, SK, 1903; Whitewood, SK, 1905; Balcarres, SK, 1906-1909; Lanigan, SK. 1910-13; Vegreville, AB, 1913-18; and Edmonton, AB, 1919. He was promoted to Corporal in 1903, Sergeant in 1904, and Staff Sergeant in 1911. Staff Sergeant Fyffe retired from the Force in 1919 and received the RCMP Long Service Medal in 1935. He died in Edmonton in 1945. On 15 February 1911, Matthew and his wife Bella adopted Bessie Isabel Fyffe, the young daughter of his younger brother, Samuel White Fyffe.
