S. Charles Smith, of Gettysburg, entered into eternal rest November 24.

He was the son of the late Stephen C. and Bessie Miller Smith.

Mr. Smith was an active member of Trinity United Church of Christ for over 50 years. He served as deacon, elder and on many other committees.

Charles served in the U.S. Army from March 1943 to December 1945. He was assigned to the 3937 Quartermaster Gasoline Company. For nine months in southern England, this company prepared for the Allied invasion of Europe and to follow the troops with the gasoline needed to battle the German Army. As the Army moved through France, Belgium and into Germany, they followed.

After being discharged from the Army, he was employed by the Inductive Equipment Plant behind Gettysburg College until the plant closed. Following that he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier for over 30 years until his retirement in 1983.

He was a 50-year life member of the Gettysburg Fire Department and was a continuous member for 60 years of the American Legion, Post 202 and served as Commander 1968-1969. He coached some of the early Legion baseball games. Charles loved the sports world and was a Yankee fan forever. He was an avid bowler and golfer. In recent years he enjoyed his Monday afternoons with the senior bowlers at Edgewood Lanes.

He is survived by his wife of over 58 years, Margaret B. Smith, whom he met at Gettysburg High School where he was a proud member of the class of 1942, and also surviving are three sons: Stephen Smith of TX, Michael Smith of Gettysburg and Mark Smith of GA; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a siser, Doris Lowery in 1980.
