After his marriage to Levina White, they resided in Chillicothe in Ross Co., Ohio, where Henry was counted in the 1830 census. In 1840, they were living in Circleville in Pickaway Co., Ohio, where the family is listed in that year's census. During this period Henry evidently acquired the education and experience to pursue a life's work in medicine, specializing in surgery and dentistry, professions attributed to him in the 1850 Census which recorded him still residing in Circleville.

All of Henry and Levina's 13 children were born in Ohio. A daughter, Elizabeth E., died on August 15, 1851 and was buried in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. The last child was born in 1850. Therefore, sometime between 1850 and August 15, 1851, Henry moved, with his family, to Greene Co., Missouri, where he was one of the first doctors in the area. He gained high respect in the County and when the Town of Springfield was incorporated in 1855, he became its first mayor [actually he is lasted as the 4th to serve as Mayor 1856-1857}, serving a one-year term. In those early days, henry's younger brother John, them a doctor too, was also practicing in green County.

During the waning years of the Civil War, Henry was the Surgeon of the Post at the Army's General Hospital in Springfield. At the war's end the hospital was phased out and Henry was relieved of his responsibilities in July of 1865. not long after that, he moved again to reside in Neosho in Newton Co., Missouri, where he and Levina are recorded in the 1860 Census. he was also included in an 1860 list of "heads of households" of Newton County.

Henry S. died April 19, 1869. His death was noted in the Free Press of Bolivar, Polk Co., Missouri, the article stated that "Dr. Henry S. Chenoweth, formerly of Greene Co., MO found dead, April 29, 1869, thrown from a horse a few days since."

Levina lived on in Newton County. In the 1870 census of that County, she and her daughter Clara M. were recorded living in the same household in Neosho Township. Lavina died there May 29, 1889. She and Henry are buried in the IOOF cemetery in Neosho.

I have never found a record of Henry's middle name, all records listing him as Henry S. Chenoweth, but I believe the S. was for Safley, his mother's maiden name. My wife and I visited this cemetery early one evening during our trip to Pineville. Without knowing where to look, my wife found Henry's grave in the lower older looking section of the cemetery. I felt like something guided us to it. The next year we found the documents which proved is place in the Chenoweth tree as the son of James Francis Chenoweth
