The birth of Mathias is recorded in the family bible, Margaret's daybook and Simonsberg records as March 10, 1856. In recording this birth, Margaret wrote, "which is the second one." His godfather was his grandfather, Marten Himpkamp. Mathias came to America, at age 14, with his father and brother, Andy, in January of 1870. In 1880 he is found in Crawford Co., IA working for the Suckstorf Family. Mathias appears to have been the first of the family to settle in Nebraska. We know that Mathias married in Pierce Co., NE to Anna Marie Haba on October 07, 1887. She was an immigrant from Bohemia, believed to be the daughter of Joseph and Josphine Haba. Matt was the 2nd son to marry. He was 31 she was just 13.

The family lived near Osmond, Nebraska in a sod hut. Birth certificates are known to exist for the two oldest children, Maria Elise and Henry, and identify Osmond, Nebraska as their place of birth. There were eight children by Mathias and Anna. The first five are identified as being born in Nebraska and the last three in Elma, WA. By these dates we know the family moved from Nebraska to Elma between the year of the 1900 Census, which finds them in Knox Co., NE and 1902 (the birth of Pauline in Washington). they lived in a small farm in Elma. Mathias was a short, solid man with a good sense of humor.

Somewhere between 1908 and 1910 Mathias and Anna were divorced. Anna is found with her 7 unmarried children living in the Town of Elma. She is listed as a laundress and divorced. Mathias has not been found in that Census. Anna remarried to John Clark and lived in Seattle, WA where she is found in the 1920 census. Later she moved to California with several of her daughters. Anna died on November 22, 1967 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. She is buried in Forest Lawn cemetery, Glendale, CA

Mathias died in Elma on September 20, 1924 and was buried on September 23 in Sharon Cemetery near Elma. There is a picture of him there with what is believed to be a second wife. Her name is thought to have been Catherine Anne. She also is buried in the Sharon cemetery. There is also a Paul Laprath (d: 1929) buried in this cemetery. It is presumed that Paul maybe a foster son of Mathias and Catherine, but it is not certain and somewhat puzzling.
