Robert Mumford was the son of Frank and Rosetta Mumford. He left High School early to join the US Navy. He served as an aviation ordinance specialist on the USS Bogue, which was responsible for sinking 11 German and 2 Japanese submarines. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Oswego and completed his high school education.

Robert joined the NY state Police as a state trooper and then went back to school and earned his BS and MS degrees in Education from SUNY Oswego. He then taught high school for thirty five years before retiring in 1985.

He was survived by his wife, two children, three grandchildren, and a great granddaughter. Another son died before him.
