Professor at Burlington Medical University. Husband of Sarah L. (Pratt) Thayer, who he married in January of 1841. Graduated from Vermont Medical College in 1838. The Vermont State Legislature created the office of Surgeon-General during the Civil War and he was appointed to the position and given the rank of Brigadier-General. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon in the U.S. Army by President Lincoln and was brevetted Captain U.S. Vols. Parents: Dr. Samuel White and Ruth (Packard) Thayer. Husband of Sarah L. (Pratt) Thayer.

Cause of death: blood poisoning.
