Son of David and Anne (Bryant) Smith, born in Winchester City, VA.

Bryant Smith served in the American Revolutionary War as a Private, in Captain Shepherd's Company, of the 10th Regiment; NC militia - enlisted in 1779.

After his service in the Revolutionary War, Bryant Smith (age 19) married Dolly Bryant (age 16) on 23 Mar 1783 in Botetourt, Virginia.
The marriage is recorded in "Virginia, Select Marriages, 1785-1940", p 503, FHL #30734. It is interesting that a marriage that dates 1783 is recorded in this book.

The family settled into Randolph Co, NC.

On 22 Oct 1783, Bryant Smith received a land grant for Revolutionary War service in the amount of 342 acres - this quantity of acres is equal to 45 months service. The information can be verified in his pension file. It is based on a letter signed by William Hill, Secretary of State, State of North Carolina, dated 4 Nov 1843.

Per his pension application, dated 24 Dec 1845, Bryant Smith stated that the family moved into Hawkins Co, TN and then onto Blount Co before his final settlement into Marshall Co, AL. It is important to note that, Marshall Co was formed from parts of Blount Co in 1836 - likely that the boundaries changed, not the family location.

Although he received a substantial land grant, Bryant Smith did not receive a monetary pension. The pension was rejected under "failed to serve required 6 months" - the minimum service necessary to do so. Bryant appealed the denial of the pension until his death.

He is last recorded in the 1850 Census, residing with his wife, Dolly, in Marshall Co, AL. He died the following year.

Bryant lies at rest near his wife, Dolly. There are several Smith's buried nearby.

His grave was marked on 7 Oct 1990 by the Sons of the American Revolution for his service.

There Bryant SMITH enlisted in 1779 in the American Revolutionary War as a Private, in Captain Shepherd's Company of the 10th Regiment; North Carolina militia. Most likely his service included the engagements on March 15, 1781, between the American forces under Nathanael Greene, and British Commander Lord Charles Cornwallis at the Battle of Guilford Court House.
