Bertha M. Rice, of Danese, WV, went to her heavenly home, August 8, 2016, at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg following a short illness.
Born December 28, 1930 on Backus Mountain, she was the daughter of Beecher C. and Eva Sawyers Goins.
She prided herself in having a strong work ethic and was never idle. She worked as a Special Needs aide for Fayette County Schools for many years, as well as a clerk at Rogers Bestway in Danese. She had many hobbies; including sewing, quilting, crocheting baby quilts, and most recently doing any kind of puzzles. She loved and served her Lord and Savior. She deeply loved her church and her family. She loved cooking and everyone enjoyed her homemade rolls.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Milton J. Rice in 1992 and her grandson, Cortney Rice in 1993.
She was the last member of her immediate family; preceded by her sisters, Eva Pugh, Ila Pugh and Barbara Busby; infant Virginia Goins and brothers, Owen, Elbert, Bernard, Eldridge and Manual Goins.
She is survived by her children, Randall M. Rice, of Danese; Marilyn Smith and husband Gary, of Danese; and Lisa Whiting and husband Steve, of Columbus, Ohio. She leaves two granddaughters, Katie Spinks and husband Chris of Covington, Virginia, and JoAnne Taylor and husband Bruce, of Gap Mills, West Virginia. She also has five great grandchildren; Luke and Jace Taylor, Haden, Avery, and Ben Spinks. Also included are step grandchildren Barbara Christian and husband Jimmy, Gary Smith Jr, Allen Smith and wife Kelsea, Steven Whiting and wife Miranda, and Matthew Whiting and wife Bethany, and ten step great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Shirley Goins and numerous nephews and nieces.
Service will be conducted at Meadow Bridge Missionary Baptist Church at 2 pm, Friday, August, 12, 2016 with Rev. William Howard Gwinn and Rev. Mike Whisman officiating. Visitation for friends will be held two hours prior to the service from 12 noon until 2 p.m.
Family will serve as pallbearers.
Burial will follow at Wallace and Wallace Cemetery, Clintonville.
