Of Quaker ancestry. In the early 1870's he was the owner of the largest saw mill in the world at Chippewa Falls, WI. and held immense tracts of timber in that area. He was a railroad builder as well, opening up that part of Wisconsin by constructing important lines. Moved to Montana about 1879. Married twice. Second wife, Lucy nee Ford survives him, along with 2 sons, and 3 daughters.
