John was active in sports in his youth and was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos fan. John worked for Budweiser in Alamosa until he moved to Las Vegas to attend New Mexico Highlands University.
His gregarious nature, quick wit and infectious smile quickly earned him friends in his adopted town. He bartended at the Las Vegas Elks Club from 1988-1989. His bartending talents soon landed him at Dick's as he continued his education. Just like every bar has a signature drink, every bar has a signature bartender.
During Masa's eight years at Dick's he was that signature bartender. He was just as quick with a drink as he was with a joke. Upon graduating from Highlands Masa worked in Taos for Frito Lay as a distributer for SE Colorado and NE New Mexico, including the "Enchanted Circle".
But it wasn't until he was hired by the New Mexico Department of Work force solutions that he found a true career path that he loved. He specialized in preparing San Miguel county youth for the work place. He was instrumental in preparing transitional job fairs to introduce the business community to the next generation of "his high school kiddos". He truly loved his work. He met many of his friends through his work and stayed close with his friends from school. He loved watching basketball and making friendly "wagers" with his close friends.
Masa had an infectious smile and was the life of the party, if not the instigator. His partner, Becky, was by his side until the end. They had been friends for over 40 years and had hopes of one day retiring in Taos to enjoy the rest of their days together.
John touched many lives and will be forever loved and missed by those that had the pleasure of calling him "friend". A memorial was held on May 3, 2016 at the Serf Theatre. A special thanks to Jonathan and Charlotte Moore for their generosity.
