JOHN HENRY MORRIS was the 1st son & 2nd child of Harrison Ruffin Morris "Henry" and Martha Ann Cheatham "Ann." Named for his 2 grandfathers, "John" for his mother's father, John Cheatham and "Henry" for his Dad's father, Henry Morris; young John moved with his family from Mecklenburg County, Virginia to Spring Hill Township, Hempstead Co, AR, where John grew up.In 1857, John married Nancy Burgess, daughter of Thomas and Nancy Burgess, both of whom died by 1839, when Nancy was a baby. She was living with her older sister, Elizabeth Amanda Burgess Clark in Arkansas when she met John.In 1858, John and Nancy had a son, Thomas Ruffin Morris (Sr) who was born in Lewisville, AR. Tom was the only child the couple had. In 1861, John & his younger brother, George Washington Morris, whom he called "Buddy" joined the AR 4th Confederate Infantry Company E in McNair's Brigade. John was promoted from Private to Corporal in November 1862; but John was "Killed in Action" in the "Siege of Jackson" during The Jackson Campaign in Jackson, MS. Today, the site of his death is located in the corner area of Willow & Silas streets, according to Jackson cartographers, Kirk Neill & Clifton Hackler.His brother saw him shot and said he was buried with the other soldiers, without identifying each of them. John is buried 1 mile away from where he died in the Confederate Section of Greenwood Cemetery Unknown Soldiers Headstones. John Henry Morris' son, Thomas Ruffin Morris, named his first son John after him; but he, too, died from a bullet during a hunting expedition when he was a teenager..
