Arnold served as a Fireman First Class, U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-5), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in New Haven County, Connecticut prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Navy on July 9, 1940 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Arnold was "Killed In Action" when the Yorktown, in what was known as the Battle of the Coral Sea, was hit by two torpedo's lunched by Japanese Nakajima B5N "Kates" and also hit by three bombs dropped by Japanese Aichi D3A "Val" dive bombers during the war.

The Yorktown survived the attack only to be sunk later on June 7, 1942 in the Battle of Midway.

Arnold was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea.
