Juanita was the youngest of five daughters born to the late Joseph Albert and Ida (Hatchel) Bates. She attended Jefferson Davis School of Nursing in Houston and became an RN in 1939. She worked for Hillcrest Hospital, Dr. Brian Aynesworth and retired in 1982 while working for Dr. Darrell Slette.

Juanita married C.W. "Blackie" Smith on Aug. 21, 1998. It was the crowning moment of her life when, at the age of 83, she became a wife and "Mom" to three wonderful children.

Juanita was a wonderful, loving Christian lady who loved playing Skip-Bo, her evening milkshakes, and her little dog, Precious. She was much loved by everyone who had the good fortune to know her and she will live forever in our memories. She was a longtime member of Lake Shore Church of Christ.

Juanita is survived by her husband, Blackie; children, Charles L. Smith and wife, Linda, of Bosqueville, Ricky L. Smith, of Hewitt, and Charlane Thompson and husband, Pat, of Riesel; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her nieces, Idabeth Honnoll, of Waco, and Barbara Sue Alexander and husband, Don; and many great-nieces and nephews.
