***Some people claim that John was born around 1740, and he died in 1790. But John was definitely born before 1740, because it is known that he was born in Germany, and it is known that his parents sailed to America in 1740. (His father's name was on the 1740 passenger list for the ship "Lydia.") Furthermore, John definitely died after 1790, because he was seen on the Tax Lists, up through 1793. His will was recorded in January of 1794, because he died in January of 1794.
***Some people also claim that John had sons named John Back (1760-1845) and Jacob Back (1764-1839), but John only had daughters, as proven by the Tax Lists and other documented evidence. Those two other men were actually John's cousins (sons of his father's brother).
John and his wife Margaret had five daughters: Elizabeth (b. 1777), who married John Embry; Anna (b. 1779), who moved to Rockingham County with her mother, around 1808; Sarah (born 1783), who moved to Rockingham County with her mother, around 1808; Frances (b. 1786), who married Henry Floyd in 1806, but she died in 1815; and Suusannah (b. 1790), who married Henry Floyd in 1817, who was previously married to her sister Frances.
After John died, his widow Margaret moved to Rockingham County, VA, to live with her daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Embry. They lived on 100 acres, along Wolf Run, just east of the town of Elkton. In 1809, Margaret bought 50 of those acres, and her sister Elizabeth bought the other 50 acres. Elizabeth and John Embry then moved to Harrisonburg, where they both later died. Margaret was seen on the census reports and the tax lists, in Rockingham County, until her death in 1831.
