Darrell Glenn Carpenter, 78, of Washburn St., died August 6, 2016 at Carolina Healthcare Cleveland. He was born on January 6, 1938 in Gaston Co. a son of the late Flossie Maye Dellinger.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy for 22 years and was retired from Southern Bell with 18 years of service. He was a longtime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Member of Gaston Baptist Men's Disaster Relief, Former Scoutmaster Troop #323, presently was assistant Scoutmaster. He found great pleasure in serving on the Main Street Program Executive Board and the Cherryville Historical Association.

Darrell was a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle and a true American. Survivors include his wife of 57 years Jane Ann (Carpenter) Carpenter, children Karen Newton of Cherryville, Gary Wayne Carpenter (Cathy) of Belmont, four grandchildren Amanda Jane Newton, Brandon Carpenter, Lee Newton, and Brittany Thomas, five great grandchildren Sophia Jane Newton, Waya Mathews, Caroline Carpenter, Abigail Carpenter, and Bryce Parton, sister Edith Roberta Bell (Mike) of Cherryville, brothers Ray Dellinger of Montgomery, AL and Robbie Dellinger of Birmingham, AL, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 11 AM with Rev. Wayne Key officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors by the US Navy and American Legion Post #100. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 at Carpenter-Porter Funeral and Cremation Services and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 112 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Cherryville, NC 28021 or to Boy Scout Troop #323, C/o Jim Sherrill, 2762 Lincolnton Hwy., Cherryville, NC 28021.
