ST. LOUIS • A memorial service is set for today for a graduate student from the St. Louis-area found dead Friday in his apartment in Chapel Hill, NC.
Matthew R. Neal, 29, who was pursuing a doctorate in accounting at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's business school, was found dead about 7:50 p.m. Friday, police say.
Chapel Hill police Sgt. Josh Mecimore said Neal was found in his bedroom by Laura Gualdoni, his fiancée. Mecimore said there were no obvious signs of a crime.
According to the North Carolina Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill, an autopsy has been conducted but the cause of death was not available because toxicology tests were not complete.
Neal was a 2001 graduate of the Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School and a 2005 graduate of Washington University's business school.
His mother, Jayne Neal, told the Daily Tarheel newspaper that her son was an excellent student known for his thirst for knowledge. She said he taught himself to read at 4 years old using his baseball cards.
A graveside service was set for 11 a.m. at the Beth Hamedrosh Hagodol Cemetery at 9125 Ladue Road in Ladue.
