Salt Lake CIty, Utah-Vernon "Vern" Ray Mitchell passed away peacefully on April 17, 2014 in the loving care of family. Vern battled two different kinds of cancer and fought bravely till the end. Vern was born May 11, 1940 to Kenneth and Lavern Mitchell in Salt Lake City, Utah. Vern worked while attending the University of Utah to obtain his Civil Engineering Master's Degree.
Vern first met his wife Connie when he moved into her neighborhood and was in her ward. They attended the Young Adult Mutual, dated and were married July 22, 1962 in the Logan Temple. Shortly thereafter their family was blessed with three children: Debbie, Jeff and Tricia.
Vern was a devout follower of Christ and an enthusiastic member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was an inspiration to all he came in contact with.
Vern loved all sports and camping. He was an avid golfer and seized every opportunity to hit the links. Vern built his family a camper and enjoyed taking them to the mountains and lakes. They enjoyed camping, boating, and fishing. Vern and Connie loved participating in a square dancing organization and ultimately became president of the group.
Vern was a loving husband and a strong support system to his entire family. He was a wonderful father and a shining example of a person of undeniable character. He taught his children to value hard work and commitment. He was a teacher and a friend to his grandchildren. Vern loved helping his grandchildren with troubling homework problems and never lost patience. Vern was a fantastic artist. He was known for drawing sketches of landscapes, animals and Mickey Mouse.
Vern is survived by his sister and brother Karen Hammer and Larry Mitchell, three children and their spouses- Debbie Mitchell, Jeff and Becky Mitchell, Tricia and Kip Liljenquist, thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Vern is preceded in death by his parents Kenneth and Lavern Mitchell, in-laws Clara and John Ernest, wife Connie Mitchell and great-grandchild Brady Shipley.
Funeral services will be held on April 21, 2014 at 11:00 am at Vern's ward house located at 287 West River Chapel Road, Draper Utah 84020. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 9:30am. Grave dedications will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive. Salt Lake City.
