William's parents are David Barbour and Mary L. Wyatt. William married Amanda Virginia Cocke, on June 14, 1855, in Campbell county, VA.
William enlisted in Capt. Thomas S. Flournoy's Co., officially known as Co. G, 6th Regiment Virginia Cavalry, on Aug. 19, at Cluster Springs, and was mustered in on Sept. 4, 1861, at Ashland, VA. William began his military service as a private, and was appointed 1st Sergeant on Dec. 26, 1861, to fill the vacancy of R.H. Owen. He was listed as: Hospitalized in Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, on Mar. 20, 1862; returned to duty Mar. 27, 1862; with typhoid fever; furloughed on Apr. 17, 1862 for 30 days, and returned to duty on July 15, 1862. He was killed in action on Oct. 20, 1862, near Paris, Fauquier county, VA. Final resting place has yet to be determined.
