LTC Harold O. "Hedge" Arbogust, Sr

Lt. Colonel Harold "Hedge" O. Arbogust, Sr., USAF-Ret., of The Woodlands, Texas, went to be with the Lord on November 22, 2006, at the age of 89. Also called by his nickname "Arby", he was born in Detroit, Michigan, to George and Lenora Arbogust on August 20, 1917; he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and patriot to his country.

An esteemed pilot, he had a distinctive military career and was a highly honorable man. He received his Associate of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and began his military career in 1941 to support his country in World War II. Harold served in the Pacific Theater as a B-24 pilot. He also trained hundreds of pilots and was responsible for thousands of military personnel throughout his career including later assignments with the Joint Task Force 8 as Chief of the Air Team in Washington, DC and the Pacific; as Commander of the 3244th Test Group at Eglin AFB, Florida; as Deputy Commander of the Nuclear Weapons Division as the Air Force Operational Test Center at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico; as Wing Inspector of the 39th Air Depot Wing at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska; and as Chief, Base Training Division, Lackland AFB, Texas.

His earlier years included building Sawbill Lodge in Duluth, Minnesota, with his father George, brothers, Wilson, George Jr., and Bob, and sister, Jane. The Lodge was a retreat for busy executives prior to the war years, and it was a true northwoods pioneer effort under very difficult conditions. The Lodge remains a popular destination in the area.

Upon retirement from the Air Force, he resided for many years with his beloved wife Lee in Austin, Texas, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his three children, daughters, Joyanne Powell and Robin Temple of the Woodlands, Texas; and son, Harold O. Arbogust, Jr., and wife Theresa, of Richardson, Texas; grandchildren, Meredith Powell, Cathryn Beers, George Arbogust, Daniel Temple and wife Barbara, Samuel Temple and Anna Temple and numerous other relatives.

Visitation with the family will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2006, followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of American Heritage Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at the Houston National Cemetery with full Air Force military honors. American Heritage Funeral Home.
