Esther's parents may or may not be Job Jellison (abt 1718 - aft 1790) and Susannah Kincaid (abt 1727 - aft 1757).

Because there was an Esther Jellison who married Elisha Pratt (1754 - 1842) on 14 Sep 1775 in Bowdoinham, Lincoln County Maine, and an Esther Jellison who married Thomas Scribner on 20 March 1789 in Waterborough, York County Maine, there has been some confusion as to Esther's parents. Whether there was one woman with this name or two is not clear. The Esther who married Elisha Pratt reportedly had at least six children with Elisha but the youngest two were supposed to be born in 1794 and 1799. This would cause a conflict with this Esther because of her marriage to Thomas in 1789. Since York is about 45 miles SE of Portsmouth, Maine, and Bowdoinham is about 35 miles NE of Portsmouth, it's possible that there were two different women named Esther Jellison. Additional research is needed. This memorial has been created for the Esther who married Thomas Scribner.

Esther and Thomas were married on 14 March 1789 in Waterborough, York County, Maine but some records show their date of marriage as 20 May 1789. March is presumed to be the correct month. Sources: The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011 Vol. 090, page 245 and Vital Records of York, Maine, Vol. 112, page 102. If Esther's year of birth is correct, she would have been 36 when they married.

Based on his date of birth, Esther was pregnant with her son John when she married and had her youngest daughter, Mary, when she was 55. Based on a reasonable spread of child-bearing years for most women, this seems unlikely so again, her year of birth and parents may need additional research. Another possible parent to be researched is the Alexander Jellison referenced below in THE HISTORY OF YORK COUNTY, MAINE (Philadelphia: Everts & Peck,1880), page 388: "The first settler was John Smith, who located near Waterborough Old Corner, in 1768. During the next two years, he was joined by seven other families: John Scribner, Robert Harvey, Alexander Jellison, Wm. Deering, Scammon Hodgdon, Wm. Philpot, and Wm. Nason. These men came from Berwick, Scarborough, and Somersworth, N.H., to engage in lumbering."

Esther and Thomas had the following children:

1. John Scribner (b. 27 June 1789) He married Thankful Shaw.
2. Susan Scribner (b. 16 Apr 1791)
3. Pelatiah Scribner (b. 7 Jan 1793)
4. Samuel Scribner (b. 10 Mar 1795)
5. Enoch Scribner (b. 19 Feb 1797)
6. Aaron Scribner (b. 3 Mar 1799)
7. Robert Scribner (b. 20 May 1803)
8. Sally Scribner (b. 11 Aug 1805)
9. Mary Scribner (b. 31 Aug 1807)

The actual date of death for Esther is not known but it is presumed to have been before 29 November 1830 when Thomas married his second wife, Deborah McFarland.
