Virginia George of Willows died in Chico on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, following complications from a fall in July.
She attended elementary school in Glenn and high school at Willows High. Her first line of work was cooking for farm hands, and then she was a waitress for many years.
In 1955, she went to work for the Willows Department Store (now known as Daughtry's). She began as a clerk, working her way up through the positions of department manager, and finally retired after 32 years as the personel director.
She was the member of St. Monica's Catholic Church and the Young Ladies Institute. She was also involved in Elks ladies, UPPEC, and a variety of organizations in Auburn and Willows.
In 1971, she married the love of her life, Joe George. Together, they managed the Daughtry's department store in Auburn for 17 years.
Upon their retirement, they enjoyed traveling in their RV, exploring the United States and abroad. She also enjoyed hobbies such as gardening, cooking, going to the Portguese picnics, playing cards, visiting Fort Bragg, and spending time with friends and family.
Besides being a wonderful mother to her own children, Marilyn, Marlene, Marie, and Georgia, she was an exceptional stepmother to Patty, Evelyn, and Larry.
Survivors include her daughters Marie (Mike) Juney and Georgia Larrabee, both from Willows; stepdaughter Patty Thurman of Oxnard; son in law David Petty of Boise, Idaho; grandsons Tom Juney of Chico, Wendy McCarthy of Pheonix, Ariz., Cory Petty of Boise, Idaho, Corey Chittenden of North Carolina, Craig Chittenden of Bakersfield, and Brandon Thurman of Oxnard; many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband Joe; daughters Marilyn and Marlene; stepdaughter Evelyn, Stepson Larry, granddaughter Keri Juney; brothers Jim, Ernie, and John; and sister Lila.
A Rosary is scheduled to be recited at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, at St. Monica's Catholic Church, 1129 West Wood Street, Willows. A Funeral Mass is planned for 10:00 a.m., with a graveside service to take place immediately after at the Willows Cemetery.
A reception is to be held at the St. Monica's Parish Hall. Donations can be made in Mrs. George's name to the St. Monica's Young Ladies Institute.
Services are being handled by the F.D. Sweet and Son Funeral home in Willows.
