Jose (Joseph) Maria Manuel Gilberto Anastasio Rivera Baz was born February 2, 1892 in Tacubaya, Federal District of Mexico City. He was baptized April 27, 1892 at Asunción Sagrario Metropolitano, Centro, Distrito Federal, Mexico. His father was Manuel Severo Rivera (1853-1912) a music professor. His mother was Maria Trinidad Baz (1866-1904).

Joseph's siblings were Manuel Rivera Baz (1882), Maria Enriqueta Trinidad Rivera Baz (1884-1972), Jose Francisco Manuel Rivera Baz (1886-1887), Maria Carolina Trinidad Rivera Baz (1887), Luis Trinidad Manuel Rivera Baz (1894-1983), Albert Joseph Rivera Baz (1897-1987), Maria Trinidad Rivera Baz (1899-1991) and Eduardo Rosendo Rivera Baz (1904-1905).

Joseph came to Tuscon, Arizona, United States with his father Manuel and siblings Louis Trinidad Rivera, Albert Joseph Rivera and Maria Luisa Trinidad Rivera in 1907.

Joseph married Hazel Marie Lucy (1895-1965) on May 31, 1913 in Pottawattamie, Iowa. Together they had the following children, Mary Lucille Rivera (1916-2000), Jean Elizabeth Rivera (1917-1992) and Marjorie Ann Rivera (1922-2012).

Joseph was a locomotive machinist for the Chicago North Western Railroad (C. & N. W. Shops) in Missouri Valley, Iowa starting in 1913. Joseph registered for the WWII draft in 1942 while he was in Chicago, Illinois. In his youth he was a professional boxer. In retirement he made oil paintings of events and places from his childhood.
