Artist. One of the most important painters of The Northern Renaissance. A native of Dordrecht, Netherlands, he moved to Amsterdam at the age of 15 to study under Rembrandt Van Rijn, who heavily influenced his earliest works. He is best known for his domestic genre paintings of women and children and developed a unique, detailed treatment of fabrics and textures which gained him great acclaim. In his later years he devoted himself almost exclusively to portraiture work first in Dordrecht, then later Amsterdam. Today his work hangs in every substantial Northern Renaissance collection, from Buckingham Palace to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
