Mrs. S. D. JOHNSTON, one of Perryton’s early day residents and a pioneer homesteader in Beaver county, died Wed. afternoon at a local hospital, following a short illness. She was 76 years of age.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the First Methodist church. Rev. Lloyd H. Jones and W. C. Bryan will officiate.
Active pallbearers are James BLAIR, William GRAY, Daniel NEWMAN, Leon PRIBBLE, Bruce JOHNSON and George WILSON. Honorary pallbearers are Carl ELLIS, Carl JAMISON, Ed PRIBBLE, Arthur GRAY, Del TALIAFERRO, Lewis RORABAUGH, W. B. LaMASTER and Lewis BRYAN.
Agnes Frances JONES was born January 16, 1875 to Mr. and Mrs. H. O. JONES at the government homestead at Hiawatha, Kansas. Her father was physician to Sacs and Fox Indians at Reserve, Kansas.
When she was five years of age, the family moved back to the old home near Bowling Green, Ky., where she attended a country school a short time and finished high school at Bowling Green. She taught in rural schools and went to Potter College School for Girls, alternately until her graduation in 1894.
She was married in 1897 to Benjamin B. SAUNDERS and the couple moved immediately to Bonham, Texas. Mary SAUNDERS was born to this union in 1898. In 1899, they returned to Kentucky, and in 1900 moved to Indiana, where Mr. SAUNDERS died.
The widow returned to Bowling Green for a short time, then went to Bonham, Texas, where she clerked and kept books until 1902 when she rejoined her father and brothers, who had since moved to Tipton, Okla. She shared their home until she homesteaded in Beaver county in 1903. She farmed her claim and on January 15, 1910 married S. D. JOHNSTON.
To this union was born three sons – David, in 1910; Gouldon, Aug. 12, 1913; Joseph, June 28, 1916. The family lived on the farm until 1920, when they moved to Perryton. They lived here until 1927, when they moved to the Rio Grande Valley.
Mr. JOHNSTON died on Dec. 24, 1933, and the family moved back to the old homestead.
Gouldon died on Dec. 17, 1941, a member of the U. S. Navy who was killed in a plane crash on the east coast. He was one of the first servicemen from Ochiltree county killed in line of duty during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Samuel D. of Liberal and Joseph of Gray; a daughter, Mrs. Trulen GOOCH, Perryton; two step sons, J. W. JOHNSON of Indio, Calif., and G. D. JOHNSTON, Anchorage, Alaska; a step daughter, Mrs. John WEEDEN of Guymon; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. LEWIS of Harlingen, Texas; Mrs. Z. W. SMITH, Highland Park, Michigan, Mrs. W A. STORES, Hardy, Ca., 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
