Son of Mr. Maurice C. Hill who resided in Weston, Connecticut.

Samuel served as a Seaman Second Class, U.S.S. Preston (DD-379), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Fairfield County, Connecticut prior to the war.

The Preston was sunk in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal when the Japanese cruiser Nagara fired and struck the Preston with a torpedo salvo during the war. The torpedo strike had put both firerooms out and toppled the afterstack eventually sinking the ship.

The Preston lost 116 of her crew.

Samuel was one of the 116 crewmen lost and was declared "Missing In Action" during this attack.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

In the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, which was considered a United States strategic victory, the Navy lost 2 light cruisers, 7 destroyers, and 36 aircraft for a total of 1,732 killed in this four day battle.
