Letha "Lee" Hughes Loving passed away Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the age of 89. Lee was born August 19, 1926 in Hominy, Oklahoma when it was still Indian Territory to Robert Addison Hughes and Mae Walker Hughes who preceded her in death. She was an only child and lived in various places in Oklahoma ultimately moving to Lexington, Kentucky where she finished high school graduating from Peabody. She then went to college graduating from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri which at that time was a private women's college. Letha went to work as a stewardess with Braniff Airways for a few years and then as a reservationist with Eastern Airlines in Louisville, Kentucky. She met her future husband, Roger at Ft. Knox, Kentucky where he was stationed as an Officer in the Army. She told her father after meeting him that weekend, that she had met the man she was going to marry. They married 6 months later on September 13, 1947 at the Army Chapel at Ft. Benning, GA and were married 49 years until his passing in 1996. During his career in the military, they lived in Japan right after marrying where Roger was an Honor Guard to General McArthur at the American Embassy in Tokyo; Ft. Benning, Georgia; Philadelphia, PA; Ft. Sam, Texas; Ft. Jackson, S. Carolina; Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas and E. Lansing, Michigan. Colonel Loving retired in 1965 from the Army and they settled and made their home in San Antonio, Texas. Lee was in the luxury travel business from 1971 and finally retiring in the spring of 2014 after 43 years.
She had been at Herff Travel when she retired for 25 years. In the course of her career he expertise was Southeast Asia. She traveled extensively when she started out in the industry and later she and Roger traveled the world. In 2000, she was mentioned in Conde Nast Traveler Magazine for her expertise on Bali and Asia. In 2002 she was named by the same publication as one of the top 100 travel agents in the U.S. In 2010 she made her 52nd trip to Thailand. She loved Bangkok. She had visited all of the countries in Southeast Asia numerous times. She and Roger made one round the world trip. In 2013 at the age of 86 she made her 5th trip in 5 years to see the Bengal Tigers in Ranthambhore National Park which had been a dream of hers. During her years of travel, she had been to Egypt, East and South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Myanmar, Russia, Cambodia, Viet Nam, Indonesia and Bali many years in a row with Roger, China and many trips to the U.K. and Europe. She was an avid golfer for many years but gave that up in her later years. Lee was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) She was preceded in death by Roger and her grandson, Matthew Loving in 2009. She is survived by her son, Jeff Loving (Pat) of Boerne, TX; her daughter, Barbara Carvajal (Gary) of Missoula, MT and her daughter, Cathie Keller (Kris) of San Antonio, TX., who helped care for her mother with devotion in the last years of her life. Also surviving her are 4 grandchildren, Mark Hamilton Loving (San Antonio), Katie Lee (Keller) and Brian Komloske, Denver, CO., John Thomas (J.T.) Keller and Tyler Bass Keller both of San Antonio, TX; one great granddaughter, Kaitlyn Claire Loving, Austin, TX. She will be missed greatly. Rest in Peace Sweet Mommy. We Love You. Interment will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
