Paul William Crawford, 51, passed away March 16, 2016 after a fall, in Ogden, Utah. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vikki McNair. Vikki was truly a ray of warm and steady light in his life.

Deeply rooted in a rich family heritage in southern Indiana, he was born in Salem and raised in English to cherished members of a close knit family. Parents, William Arthur Crawford and Marjorie Pauline Standiford Crawford and siblings, Harold, Kathy, John, Patrick and Michelle.

Paul attended English High School in English, Indiana. He was involved with many activities and friends in school. He was also in involved the local 4-H. One of the highlights of Paul’s life was to act as a tour guide at Wyandotte Cave. He was very proud of carrying on an honored family tradition of caving…following his Uncle Donnie and Brother John leading people of all ages from all over the world through that natural wonder. Paul carried out that duty with enthusiasm and expertise.

Paul served a Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Northern Utah Mission. It was because of the powerful experiences he shared with the brothers and sisters in northern Utah, that he was drawn back to Ogden to live. Talk of his mission always brought back strong emotions, the spirit he had felt during powerful experiences he had shared with people he served and loved deeply.

Paul worked several years in southern Indiana driving trucks of coal and gravel. He later worked several years at Jasper Engines. Paul thrived growing up happy and healthy on a farm with grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins; chasing fireflies in summer twilight, splashing around with cousins in Grandma Pearl’s creek, cuddling kittens and long conversations as a small child with his “imaginary friends”….his little “Punks.”

Paul’s sister in law, Alicia, commented, “Paul was a delight, he brought a smile to all. Being with Paul was like going to another world where acceptance and beauty abounded.”

Cousin Maria remarked, “Paul was quick to laugh and loved to make others laugh. His eyes twinkled when he was up to some little mischief.”

Paul’s imagination and love for the magical realms sometimes carried him to worlds full of hobbits, unicorns and friendly dragons.

His nephew, Michael, reminisced, Paul loved caving. Not only would he take friends and family but once took the time to take a blind little person along with his friends. He loved caring for people, this is was the kind of heart Paul had.

Another memory from his nephew was, when Paul heard his family was visiting at a nearby camping spot, he would show up at their site with boxes of meat and proceeded to BBQ. They remarked that they were lucky to spend time with him. This was a feeling everyone in the family felt.

On the night of Paul’s death his brother, Patrick, commented, “Paul would give you the shirt off his back if he thought you needed it.” This was Paul’s spirit, we all knew it and loved him for it. Paul had a compassionate spirit, evident in his generosity towards others…often giving thoughtful gifts for no reason in particular. His compassionate spirit was also evident in his love for cats and dogs, especially those that needed rescued.

He was a fiercely loyal friend to all. Paul knew no boundaries when it came to extending a helping hand or love, whether it be to his wife, mother, sister, brother, niece, nephew, cousin or friend.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, William Arthur Crawford. Paul is survived by his Mother, M. Pauline West, his brothers and sisters, Harold (Alicia), Kathy (Val), John (Sherry), Pat, Michelle (Jason), his stepchildren and nieces and nephews, and other family members and friends.

Graveside funeral services will be held Friday, March 18, 2016, at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950E. Dimple Dell Road (10600 S.), Sandy, UT.
