Bonard M. Batte
(March 27, 1931 - August 3, 2016)
Bonard was called to his eternal hunting grounds on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, at the age of 85. Bonard blessed the world with his presence on March 27, 1931. He was the middle child and beloved son Robert "Milton" Batte and Alla Mae (Riggs) Batte, born in James Canyon. Bonard loved the Sacramento Mountains he grew up in and spent many a day hunting. He attended the Red Brick School in Cloudcroft. Bonard was lifelong learner and developed himself into a man of many talents. In June Danley he found his perfect partner and helpmate. They were married on April 18, 1954.
After school, he began his cowboying days as a ranch hand on the Otero Mesa. He spent time in Wyoming learning the carpentry trade and went on to build two different homes for his parents, a home for him and June and the kids, and then helped Frank and Karen build their home.
Bonard served four years in the Navy and then began a career with the Civil Service as a fireman. Bonard and June bought a place in Laborcita Canyon in 1962, raised their family there, ranched cattle, kept bees and raised fruit. The families still live there today.
Bonard taught himself and June the leather craft trade and they made many a saddle, belt, wallet, purse and chaps. Next he got them in to making turquoise and silver jewelry. June's grandfather, Jasper Daugherty, was a fiddle maker and Bonard decided to try his hand at it. He would build them, June would tune them up and play them. They made over 100 fiddles plus some mandolins and guitars. June taught the grandkids to play the fiddle and guitar and Bonard loved to hear them play. Throughout his life, Bonard was a knife maker and people around the world have his knives. Bonard was a teacher and loved sharing his knowledge and skills with others.
Bonard was proceeded in death by his parents and older sister, Aslean. He is survived by his wife June, daughter Becky (Ken) Lane, son Frank (Karen), grandchildren Kris Lane (Rachael), Jamie Lane Spotswood (Dexter), Brad Batte (Ashley), Travis Batte and Stacie Batte (Shaun), great grandchildren Taylor, Katie and Peyton Batte, Kalyn, Robert and Haley Spotswood, sister Peggy Barden, and Matt Lasiter, longtime family friend.
Bonard's family invites you to join them in celebrating his life on Monday, August 8, 2016 at Hamilton Funeral Home in Alamogordo with viewing and visitation at 9:00 am, with services at 10:00 am, Charles Walker officiating.
Bonard will then be laid to rest with his ancestors in the James Canyon Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brad Batte, Travis Batte, Matt Lasiter, Ken Lane, Myron Baker, Cody Blades, Jason Ellinger and Tim Keelin. Honorary pallbearers will be Red Stanbrough, Jim Baker, Michael Shyne, Phillip Lane, Donald Lane, Frank Campbell, Junior Daugherty, James Neal and Jesse Love.
Everyone is invited to the gathering and meal being held afterwards, at the Cloudcroft Ski Area. Musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments.
