Hempstead was an early settlement bought from the natives by Rev. Robert Fordham and Mr. John Carman, in 1643. The first Edward Spragg to settle in NY, was among the early settlers to "the Neck", later called Hempstead, Long Island, NY. This settlement was under Dutch jurisdiction.

Edward's son, Edward Spragg (1666-1725) married Abigail Southard from Hempstead, Nassau County, LI, NY, USA. Edward and Abigail had seven children. All of them were born in Hempstead, Nassau Co., NY.
