Vera worked for Pioneer Finance, which later became known as Personal Finance Company in Lawrenceville, Illinois for a total of 47-1/2 years. She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She volunteered for adult literacy. She was also a member, secretary, and on the board of directors for the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.
Preceding Vera in death were her parents; her husband, Paul; son, Phillip David; infant son; three brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include son, Kenneth โRexโ Stevens of Brazil, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Donna Stevens of Woodstock, Georgia; brothers, Gary Alford of Lawrenceville, Illinois and Jack Alford and wife, Joeann of Greenville, Illinois; sisters, Shirley Woodruff of Lawrenceville, Illinois and Mildred Proffitt of Granite City, Illinois; sister-in-law, LaVaughn Whitten of Lawrenceville, Illinois; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a family friend, Mike Padgett.
