Muse of many artists and poets. She was born Elena Dimitrovna Diakonova in Russia. At 17 she was diagnosed with tuberculosis and the family sent her to a sanatorium in Switzerland where she met future poet Paul Eluard. They married at the beginning of the World War I and had one daughter. Some 11 years later they were introduced to a young Spanish painter, Salvador Dali, who fell madly in love with a woman 11 years older than him and tried various extravagancies such as waxing his armpit and dying it blue or wearing a red geranium on his head, to attract her attention. She abandoned her husband, her daughter and the elegant environment to spend the next few months living with this strange man in a secluded house lost deep in the Spanish wilderness. Six months later Gala realized that living so far away from the capitals made no sense and so the two returned to Eluard's apartment in Paris where he lived with Cecil and where the four of them spent lived until Dali finally rose to international stardom. She was portrayed as his one and only muse – Madonna, Venus and Helen the Beautiful - that made him a man and an internationally acclaimed genius. They married in 1932. When she died, Dali said "...she is not dead, she will never die...". He was hit by a strong bout of depression and lost all interest in the arts. She was buried in the Castle of Púbol in Catalonia which Dalí had bought for her.
