"Due West Telescope
March 22, 1861
Died in Wilcox Co., Ala. on the 7th of March, Joseph Jones in the eight first year of his age. ... The deceased filled a large place in our Zion. He was indeed a pillar in the church. His descendants compose the larger part of the membership of Bethel. ... He was born and raised in Abbeville District, S. C. From there he removed to the State of Missouri, and after a few years stay he emigrated to Alabama and settled the spot where he closed his earthly pilgrimage. He and his brother, Robert Jones, were the first A. R. Presbyterian settlers in the County of Wilcox where now exist two flourishing churches. He was ordained an elder in the Lebanon church, the original organization in 1828. .."
