John E. Vann III of Costa Rica, and formerly of St. Simons Island, passed away on July 24, 2016, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

John was born in Waycross, Ga., on Jan. 5, 1940. He was the son of the late John E. Vann Jr. and the late Madee Watson Novesl. He was raised on St. Simons Island by his father and his late stepmother, Gerrye Vann.

He was a graduate of the 1958 Class of Glynn Academy. After high school, he joined the Navy for four years and then attended North Georgia College, where he received his architectural degree. He moved to Atlanta and worked as a draftsman before opening up his own successful architectural firm, Vann and Partners. Many of his projects can still be seen in Destin, Fla., Hilton Head S.C., Atlanta and St. Simons Island, Ga.

He later retired to Costa Rica, where he purchased and managed several apartment complexes. He reached out through his church and friends in Costa Rica to help families with financial and medical needs.

He took a family with a crippled child under his caring wing to build them a home and raised money so the child could continue her college education at a United States university.

John had many joys in his life. He was an avid gardener, sailor and pilot. Even after leaving St. Simons, he still had his feet in the sand. He could be found at any given time on any beach with one of his many dogs, body surfing, and always striking up a conversation with any one of the many beach-goers. Some of his fondest memories as a child were the times he spent hunting and fishing with his father.

He is survived by his two children, Libby Vann-Fleisher (Jeff) and their son, Max Henry Fleisher, of Houston, Texas, and John Vann IV (Betsy) and their son, John Elzy Vann V, of Cumming, Ga.; his two sisters, Jan Vann Dorsey of Brunswick, and her two children, Frank Deloach of St. Simons Island, and Pam Deloach of Dawsonville, Ga., and Resa Vann Dollar of St. Simons Island and her three children, Matthew Schenck of Marietta, Ga., Whitney Schenck of Coupeville, Wash., and Tracey Schenck of East Hampton, N.Y.; his brother, Jimmy Vann of Daytona Beach, Fla., and his two children from Darien, Ga., Chaz and Rob Vann.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 6, 2016, at St. Simons United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marcia Cochran officiating.

Please join the family in celebrating John’s life at the King and Prince South Villas (villa number to be announced at service) for light fare following the service and to honor John as the eternal lifeguard of the King and Prince pool.

He will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery in Waycross, Ga., next to his father and stepmother.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the St. Simons Island United Methodist Church.
