Wilma Hoogeveen was born March 30, 1928, the daughter of Dietrich and Julia (Koch) Knobloch at the family farm between Lester and Alvord, IA. Wilma attended country school at Cleveland number 4, graduating after 8th grade.
In 1946, she started working for the Mosers and also for the Feuchts. In 1947, she started working at Corner Restaurant in Rock Rapids.
She was united in marriage to Marvin Hoogeveen on January 15, 1948 at the church parsonage. They made their home on a farm between Lester and Larchwood.
In 1968, Wilma became an active member of Bethel Reformed Church in Lester. Wilma received her GED from NITC in Sheldon in 1979. In 1988, she moved into Rock Rapids where she currently lived.
Wilma was an excellent seamstress and made many of her children’s clothes and she also enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She always tended to her large garden and did a lot of canning and baking. Her family always enjoyed when she made cinnamon rolls, bread pudding and her special mashed potatoes. She loved playing pinochle, doing dot to dot puzzles to keep her “mind sharp.” For fifty years she enjoyed children and loved to teach vacation bible school and Sunday school.
She was very proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and attended many of their activities. Wilma often would bring food to her family and neighbors and enjoyed visiting with them. She also enjoyed the company of her pets over the years.
This past Sunday morning, July 31, 2016, Wilma died at her home in Rock Rapids at the age of 88.
