Martha Sue Hopkins, 71, showed steadfast courage in her battle against liver disease, but died peacefully Friday, July 22, 2016 in Pleasanton.

Martha was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah to John Mahoney Martin and Elsie May Johnson on November 8, 1944. She graduated from Camden High School in San Jose, California in 1963. She married William Recil Hopkins, II on September 25, 1965 in San Jose, California. Her dedication to her family was absolute and unwavering. She missed no opportunity to volunteer at school, swimming, soccer, baseball, scouts, marching band, or whatever her boys were interested in. All the while she proudly ran the office for the sweeping company that she and Bill began in the early eighties. In 1994 she received a lifesaving liver transplant at UCSF Medical Center. With this new lease on life she discovered a passion for quilting and was an active member of her local club. She resumed her membership with the American Spaniel Club, a joy from the earliest days of her marriage. She traveled extensively with both clubs, winning many ribbons and mentions. A great moment was when her black cocker, Crocker, was named a national champion. With twenty-two years since her transplant, she was UCSF’s longest-living liver transplant recipient.

Martha is survived by her husband of 50 years, three children, John William (Chandra) of Sunnyvale, California, Derick Michael (Sheila) of Livermore, California and Brian Lee (Erin) of Portland, Oregon, brother, Fred D. Martin (Nickie) of San Jose, California, and five grandchildren, Ember Rose, Pascha Grace, Braeden Reece, Gavin James and Chloe Drew.

Martha’s wonderful spirit, joy and talents will be celebrated by her family and close friends in the coming weeks. Memorials may be given in the form of flowers or donations to Pleasanton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 300 Neal St, Pleasanton, CA 94566.

The family of Martha Sue Hopkins wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Doctors Nancy Asher and Rena Fox of UCSF and the deeply caring nursing staff at Pleasanton Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
