Norma Dell Johnson, born December 7, 1935 to Johnnie Franklin Johnson and Dovie Mae Williams Johnson, Oak Grove Community, Madison County, North Zulch Texas. Left this world for another place August 2, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in law Doug and Aline Pingrey, Brother Austin “Jack” Johnson and sister in-law Nelda Greer, two foster sisters Autis and Audrey, nephew Don Pingrey, great granddaughter Chloe Parker and three husbands James Edward Matlock, Creer Omer "Pete" Halbison, and Rusty Gammel. She is survived by 5 children, 10 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. Norma started school in 1942 at Willow Hole Grade School, and graduated in 1949 as Valedictorian of her class. She attended North Zulch High School and graduated in 1953. She married James Edward Matlock in 1952 and after graduation traveled with him throughout Texas and the United States. In 1964 she remarried to Creer Omer "Pete" Halbison and they traveled around the US for 10 years before settling back in Madisonville. Norma worked in the Madisonville area for 22 years before retiring. Norma joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in 1942 at the age of 12. She was a 40+ year member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 84 and a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign War Ladies Auxiliary Units 8233 and 4006. She was the first District President of the VFW from Madison County. She held many other district positions over the years, she poured her heart into her favorite VFW program for the POW/MIAs. She believed there should be an accounting for all who served and those that were lost. Having learned to play 42 as a child she brought it back into her life after retirement. She belonged to the Dizzie Dozen and Happy Dots 42 clubs in Bedias where she loved to play. She traveled to many surrounding communities to play and has many trophies to show for her efforts. Norma made many lasting friendships throughout her life and was great about keeping in touch with everyone. She loved crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Memorial services for Norma will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 4, 2016 at the Madisonville Funeral Home, with Lanier Stevens officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., prior to service time. Madisonville Funeral Home is charge of arrangements.
