GREGORY CALVERT
CORALVILLE, Iowa -- Gregory Mark Calvert, 66, of Coralville, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 31, 2016.

Greg grew up in Muscatine, Iowa. He had fond memories of time with family, watching barges go by on the river and time spent on the track and baseball diamond.

He graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a degree in History. He was a distance runner and received All-Conference honors.

Greg lived and traveled in Europe for a time. He came back with stories of wild nights in pubs, sleeping in Vondel Park, seeing Rembrandt paintings and being a member of a running club in England.

He lived in New York City, understood computers before people had them in their homes and ate books up like they were liver, one of his favorite foods.

Greg craved interaction. He invited new neighbors over for dinner, loved discussing the books he was reading and enjoyed a drink at Tailgaters.

He appreciated simplicity and that was reflected in the way he lived his life. He looked forward to the eagles that visited each year, a windy day on the sailboat, fixing up old cars and playing with his granddaughter.

Greg was an optimist and often had a joke or card trick ready. He was not subtle or timid and was not afraid to express himself.

He was a father that taught his kids to be independent, to challenge authority and to be Cardinals fans.

Everyone that knew Greg remembered him. If you have a memory of Greg that you would like to share, please send it to his daughter at [email protected].

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2016, at the Riverview Center located on the Muscatine Mississippi Riverfront. Private burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Scot Calvert.

Survivors include his son, Scot Calvert and wife, Katy, of North Liberty; his daughter, Abigail Calvert de Wit and husband, Tex, of Amsterdam, Netherlands; granddaughter, Fenne de Wit; and siblings, Donald Calvert, Cecelia Anderson, Miriam Navarro, Daniel Calvert, Rosiland Calvert, Shirley Calvert-Miller, Jennifer Percell, Vincent Calvert; several aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Calvert and Shirley Randall Calvert and brother, David Calvert.
