FRANKLIN – Esther Mae (Burnett) Carter Patterson, RN, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016, at Peabody Home in Franklin, at the age of 96. Born April 20, 1920 in Agawam, Mass., the daughter of Major and Catherine (Houlahan) Burnett.

Esther graduated from Agawam High School in 1939, then received her nurses training in 1943 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, MA. She spent 14 months in the Army Nurse Corp at the end of WWII with the rank of 2nd Lt. After leaving the service, she moved to Plymouth NH, where she married her husband, John Carter, and began raising her young children. Later, the family moved to Edgewater, FL. In 1963, she moved to Deland where she married her husband James F. Patterson. She worked at Fish Memorial Hospital until 1960, when she went to work at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, FL. She worked in several departments over her 23 ½ years there until she retired in 1983, closing out her last 7 years working as an emergency room nurse. A long -time resident of Deland, Fl., she felt privileged to be a charter member of the Edgewater American Legion #285, a lifetime member of the Deland VFW Post #2380, Moose Lodge #1126, and Deland Elks Lodge. She loved sewing, painting, crafts, gardening, dancing, boating, and social get-togethers with all kind of folks.

She is predeceased by her first husband of 16 ½ years, John W. Carter, and her late husband of 42 years, James F. Patterson of Peekskill, NY; and her brother, Donald Burnett.

She is survived by her first born son, Donald Palmerino, whom she was reunited with in 2014, after 70 years; sons John R. Carter (wife Lynn), William D. Carter (wife Kathy), daughter Ann M. Johnson (husband Jon), step-son Robert Patterson (wife Beverlee), and step-daughters Sandy Peters, and Laurel Vinskus; as well as her brother, Harold J. Burnett. She also has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was finally able to return home to her beloved New England 4 plus years ago. Our thanks to all the family that she so loved and many long-time friends who continued to support her through several moves, especially in her later years as her health continued to fail from Parkinson's Disease. "Thanks especially to the staff and residents at Peabody Home for their care and support of our mother and our family along this "journey".

A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date, sometime in October, by the family at the Woodland Cemetery in Cambridge, NY. Memorial gifts may be given in Esther's name to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Inc. 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018. www. Pdf.org. Also to the VFW, or Peabody Home at 24 Peabody Place, Franklin, NH 03235. The Cremation Society of NH is assisting the family with arrangements.
