Melvin James Swift, Jr. was born October 22, 1994 to the union of Bertha and Melvin James Swift, Sr. in Kodiak, Alaska. When they returned to Houston, he attended Douglas Elementary School, Lake Olympia Middle School, and graduated from Jack Yates Senior High School where he was a star basketball player. Basketball was Melvin’s passion. He played in three State Championship games for Yates Senior High School. Playing basketball he traveled all over the United States and to foreign countries representing Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Boys Basketball teams. Upon graduating from high school, Melvin enrolled as a full-time student at Trinity Valley College in Athens, Texas. As a college student at Trinity Valley, he played on the basketball team and continued to excel as an athlete. His athletic abilities and those of his teammates propelled the college’s basketball team to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Finals. He had expertise in dunking the ball a God given gift that awed those that watched him in action on the court. He had a name for his dunking ability – his high flying “Master Dunk”.

“Duke” was always a gentle spirit until he got on the basketball court, there his passion for basketball dominated, as showcased through his basketball abilities and natural athleticism. Melvin was brought up in a strong Christian family that stressed the importance of trusting in God. He was a member of Spiritual Temple Church under the leadership of Dr. Allegra M. McGrew. He brought joy to those he interacted with and had a wonderful smile that would brighten your day and soul. Melvin graced many people with charisma, gentleness, a great sense of humor, and personality. He was a “gentle giant”, full of kindness, exuding his gentle nature. He will always be remembered for his unique ability on the court, sportsmanship, and love of the game of basketball. He was blessed with a natural ability that you don’t find every day, and always expressed his gratitude to God for blessing him with his athletic gifts.

A gentle, kind, and loving young man, Melvin Swift, Jr. leaves to cherish his memory: a loving and devoted mother, Bertha Swift Harris and Jason Eugene Harris Sr. who raised him; a father, Melvin James Swift, Sr. (Monica); a beautiful daughter, Peyton Mckynlee Swift; three brothers that will forever love him, Jason E .Harris Jr., Javon E.
