PEMAQUID BEACH -- Robert "Captain Bobby" was born on February 9, 1928 in Boston, the son of Wilson and Ruth Crook. He died at his home in Pemaquid Beach, on the morning of July 28th.

He married Polly in 1949. They spent their lives summering in New Harbor, Pemaquid and then Pemaquid Beach. Early in their marriage, winters were spent in various parts of Florida, finally settling in North Palm Beach in 1958, where they resided for 54 years. He missed Polly every day since her death on December 20, 2013.

Bobby was a yacht captain of the Pandora III and IV for the majority of his life. As a yacht captain for the Ireland family, he visited many of the Caribbean Islands on sailing adventures. He also sailed extensively off the coast of Maine, told many great stories of the Halifax and Bermuda yacht races, and made a lasting impression on many of the people whose paths he crossed.

His married life began in New Harbor, followed by the "Crook-ed" Farm in Pemaquid, and he ended up living in his home on Fish Point in Pemaquid Beach. He took great pleasure in the summers at the farm, raising various animals, growing vegetables, and mowing the fields on his tractor.

He loved cooking, gardening, and golf. He was a member of the North Palm Beach Country Club and Wawenock Country Club in Walpole. Last year, at the age of 87, he built window boxes for Wawenock for their revitalization project. After losing Polly, he designed a garden in her memory on the women's 3rd hole for all to sit and enjoy.

Bob had a reputation as being a snappy dresser. He delighted in telling us the checkout girl told him he had "swag” at age 87.

He was not one to sit around. He was always puttering, building something, planting flowers, having a garden, mowing a lawn or golfing. He loved sports, and could almost always be found at his grandson’s ball games. He was a fan of the Boston Red Sox, Miami Dolphins and the Florida State Seminoles, and enjoyed watching football and PGA golf tournaments on television.

He traveled to the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and most of Europe. He loved to hunt duck, quail and turkey with the Ireland family in Thomasville, Georgia, and fish for Bluefin tuna during the summers with his son-in-law, Billy.

How can you summarize a person's life in a few paragraphs? Near the end of his life he declared that he had had a good one. He stayed married to Polly who he adored; was loved by his children: Paula and John Hall; Bob Crook, Jr. and his daughter Catie and Rob Gall (great grandson, Dominic Gall); Tim and Kathy Crook and their sons, Tim and Jack; Kim and Billy McLain and their sons Benjamin, Bo and Brett. He is survived by all of them, along with his sisters, Elaine Hatch (Dave) and Patty Benner (Billy). He was predeceased by his brother, Billy Crook; and his grandson, Bert Crook.

One of his oldest, and best friends, was Reg Reilly. They remained that way for 67 plus years and were loyal to the end.

In lieu of flowers, he requested you give to the charity of your choice. His service will be officiated by Rev. Bobby Ives on Friday, August 12th at 11am at the Brown Church in Round Pond. A gathering will follow at the Wawenock Country Club in Walpole.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for the family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com.
